- 「掘割をこえて、キャンプ・ヒル（谷戸坂）の入り口を見る。空の境目に沿ってアメリカ海軍病院が立っていた。最初のころ、この谷合いにはフランス駐屯軍の兵舎があった。のちにこのちょうど左側にフランス領事館が建ち、その背景の突端のところに領事の邸宅が建った。この谷合いの中心部をうずめていた日本人の村は完全に一掃された。
「Looking across the Creek to the mouth of Camp Hill.The American Naval Hospital stood on the sky-line.
In the very early days, this gully was the site of the French Garrison encampment.In later years the French Consulate stood just to the Left, and the Consular residence on a spur behind it. The Japanese village filling the heart of this gully was completely wiped out.」

谷戸橋から前田橋をみる

「谷戸橋（キャンプ・ヒル橋）から掘割の上方を見る。第2の橋である前田橋が遠景に見える。前田橋の左方にあった本村と元町は消滅してしまった。」
「Looking up the Creek from Camp Hill Bridge. Maeda-bashi, the second bridge,is seen in the distance. Honmura and Motomachi, on the left of Maeda-bashi, have disappeared.」
