約四分の一マイル歩いたのち、私たちは、山手のずっとはずれのところの、神社がひとつと伝説のある茶屋一軒がある浅間山から下方の第二の橋の対岸にある元町へと百の階段が急角度で結んでいる、見なれた地点にたどりついた。階段と、それがついていた崖の半分はすでになく、くずれ落ちて下の家々をおおって見えなくくていた。

After about a quarter of a mile, we reached the famil iar point where the famous Hundred Steps led steeply down from the Sengen-yama, a Shrine and fabled teahouse at the very edge of the Bluff, into Motomachi opposite the Second bridge. Gone were the steps and half the cliff with them, ob literating the houses below.

元町百段のあった浅間山
横浜開港資料館所蔵 「リチャード・A・プール氏寄贈」
「浅間山の横顔。そこから百段降りると元町に行けたが、地震のとき、階段はすべて頂にあった数本の木と茶屋とともに完全にくずれおち、下方の家々を押しつぶしてしまった。右端の一本の木と人の踏みつけて通った跡が、それまで元町のあった場所を示している。ーO.M.プール撮影ー」
